China Insists the Sometimes Lethal Problem with the Jerky Treats Is Ours

Tainted chicken jerky treats imported form China have been sickening and even killing dogs now for several years. In 2012, the number of dogs killed reached a max according to Dr. Dan McChesney, director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine.

McChesney told me that  U.S. experts inspected facilities in China in 2012, and weren't able to discern what the problem is. Although, there were additional reports that U.S. inspectors were sometimes denied access.

Because the FDA can't explain specifically what's wrong with the chicken jerky treats, there has been no recall.

And the U.S. response: Nothing.

Meanwhile, through all throughout the year, pets continued to get sick, some dying.

Arguably, most tragic, nearly all those who sell chicken jerky treats in the States won't comment (meaning the pet food companies), except in some cases - covering their you-know-what's - by admitting on their websites of a potential problem.

If the pet food companies won't stand up to do the right thing, how about those who sell the products - it would be nice (and ethical) if Petco or PETsMART took a stand, and said 'We're not selling this stuff.'

Several public officials have called for our government to do something about if China doesn't, and have been ignored. Most recently, Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-CA) urged the  Chinese government in a letter to “consider halting production of these chicken jerky treats until the FDA can determine whether or not the products contain tainted material,” KGO-TV in San Francisco and PetProductNewsInternational.com  reported days before Christmas.

The Chinese government did respond to this, saying that “from the perspective of the Chinese side, there might be something wrong with the FDA’s investigation guidance.” China takes no responsibility, which seems to be their track record regarding these sorts of matters.

The FDA has tested product samples for salmonella, metals, furans, pesticides, antibiotics, mycotoxins, rodenticides, nephrotoxins and other chemicals and poisonous compounds. The agency also is testing the nutritional composition, in part to determine the concentration of glycerin in the treats. The agency has outsourced some of the testing to private laboratories (not only to further expertise, but also eliminating any potential hint of partiality).

Blood chemistry analyzed from sickened pets revealed hypokalemia and a mild increase in liver enzymes, the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine reported. Blood gas analysis indicated acidosis and occasional gluscosuria and granular casts. The college recommended treatment options such as supportive care, electrolyte supplementation (including potassium supplementation) and blood gas monitoring.

Still, it's clear something is going on. And while most of the dogs affected recovered after treatment, the American Veterinary Medical Association has noted on their website. That means some dogs never recover - and tragically die. And even if they do recover, we're talking unnecessary veterinary expenses and most importantly unnecessary suffering.

The condition often presents with vomiting, lethargy and anorexia. The AVMA recommends that veterinarians who suspect a pet illness associated with the treats to report the case to the FDA.

Several facts come from all this:

- Chicken jerky treats imported from China are not likely to cause a problem. However, in 2012 as a result of a record number of complaints to the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine - it's clear some pets (far too many to be acceptable) are sickened, and some of these animals die.

- Experts, including those at the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, can't pinpoint why some pets are getting ill. China is taking no responsibility. And, in some instances, isn't cooperating.

- U.S. pet food companies, and the major pet store chains have attempted to ignore the issue.

The AVMA recommended that pet owners who feed jerky treats to pets do so in small quantities and only on occasion, especially with small-breed dogs.  I go further than the AVMA (and hope they follow) - I say, don't take a chance, why would you? There are gazillions of manufactured treats available, not to mention mini-carrots. There are also a  very few brands of chicken jerky treats truly made and manufactured in America. Beware, because it say 'made in America' on packaging doesn't mean all ingredients were necessarily sourced here.

Ok the dog treats are just a start, please note DOG FOOD BENEFUL is suspected of poisoning. Also BLUE DOG FOOD Buys there RAW FOODS from CHINA, just because it says made in USA, the foods r coming from china, there cheaper. I was told by a huge pet store that more than 1/2 of all dog food dry is made from raw food sources from china.. Because china doesn't allow testing of products by FDA, they will not issue recalls in USA or Canada. China has really no ethics, they r poisoning ther own kids, thru the powdered milk. I will post the link to get dog food alert recall if u want ok.. GOOGLE YOUR FOOD! CONTACT the manufactor, ask where does the RAW foods sourced from, ask for a list!

I recently found out that even thought, foods may say made in AMERICA, how ever the food is sourced from CHINA.. These people were so cheap, they put Malamean in the baby's milk to make it go farther!! I recently was going to change Lelos food to " BLUE" only to be informed that all products made by blue, and it's 8 other brands, is sourced out of china,! So I chose First Mate, out of Canada, made with only the freshest finest ingredients from CANADA, Don't just look at the dog food, find out where it's purchases all the ingredients from! If u don't have time, go and talk to a manager at a smaller chain, mt global pets manager saved my Lelo . I will be posting a list of all the effected doggie treats, they say giving dogs fresh raw beef is the best way to, no runs!

Best to not buy them and just buy a sweet potatoe and either give it to them raw or cooked.

I just wanted to say that my 2 little girls, Arianna and Pebbles, love sweet potatoes raw.They will eat them cooked too.  They also love raw, red, yellow or orange bell peppers. If I get frozen mixed veggies from the freezer, both girls come running and want some!  I wash them off even if I'm preparing them for myself.  My girls like to chase a bean or cubed carrot or corn or peas!  Sometimes, I think that Pebbles is part cat!  She hops around, like dancing around the bean (or whichever veggie she has chased)!  She even pretends to pouce on it a few times!  Then it's off to her heart-shaped cushion to eat it!!  My girls are so fussy that they don't even eat most dog treats.  I wanted to bring something home for them, so I got them each a bull wrinkle.  They were so disappointed!  They just left that sitting and would not touch it!  I felt bad, cuz I really wanted to give them a treat, so they got cheese! They were not sad any more then!

COSTCO IS STILL SELLING WAGGIN TAIL CHICKEN JERKY TREATS! AS OF OCT 9 2012, a dog died last week from these. Very serious, check all treats, where their ingredients are from
