Greyhounds anyone?

This is a group for all retired greyhounds...dont seem to be many about..:(............they are such beautiful, gentle animals......:)

Description: The Greyhound is as swift as a ray of light and as graceful as a swallow. They are one of the oldest and purest known breeds. They have been used on practically all kinds of small game, but the hare are their natural quarry. They like to chase small animals and have a high prey drive. Normally a quiet dog, Greyhounds like to curl up on their dog bed and be lazy for most of the day. Outdoors they are very active, loving free space to run and something to chase. They are sleek, smooth dogs that are well muscled specifically for speed. They have small, fine ears with dark round eyes and a thin face. Their tail is long and whip like, and their forelimbs and chest are muscular. They are large sized dogs despite their thin look. Greyhounds are not only fast, but they also have rather large litters. Some litters can be up to 15 puppies. Greyhounds are lively, athletic and friendly. They are aloof with strangers, as most sight hounds are, but remain playful and faithful to their families. They are sensitive dogs, however, and care should be taken to ensure they are not treated harshly. They get along with most people and animals, although their natural instinct is to chase down smaller animals. They get along well with children, and are affectionate and gentle. Many Greyhounds come from racing backgrounds, and therefore may need to be retrained for a home life. The Greyhound makes a wonderful pet, racing companion and keen sight and scent hound.

The greyhound is the oldest purebred canine in the world they are also the fastest. The second fastest landanimal only superseeded by the cheetha. The love laying on sofas and anything soft and comfortabel because of their long slender bodies have no fat whatsoever therefore it is extremely important that they have a lot of comfortabel places to rest on and choices as where they would like to sleep.They can be considered good with children provided the children are welll manered and don´t pester the greyhound.Greyhound are godd as running companions as they are sprinters and many of them come of the tracks with old injuries.They are not very active outdoors either. They will chase any small animals that runs away from them not to play but to kill. They are not viscious in any way but their preydrive is through the roof. the game they chased in centuries past were red deer hare wild boars gazels and yes the hares and rabbits that came later though. They were royal companions until 1926 when the mechanical hare was invented. They fell from grace in the sense that these royal companions became cheap comodities.This has lead to emense suffering for the greyhounds. As one who has dedicated her life to saving these royal sighthounds. I can tell you that yes they suffer a lot of abuse and mistreatment. Now another misconception about greyhounds is that they go by scent they do not they hunt by sight only. Hence the name sighthounds.This should clear up the hickups from the introduction above.I have had sighthounds since 1986 and started out with a greyhound. Currently I have three greyhounds and one whippet. I find them utterly fascinating and love them to bits.

He enjoyed it very much new stuffed toy extra treats and a good morning run and a lovely walk later. He enjoyed the day knowing he is loved.I feel very fortunate to have him in my life.

He is happy and contented many greyhounds never make it into rescue or get their forever home. Connor is a deeply loved family member and his birthday is a happy occasion he is loved by us all. As are my two other greyhounds and one whippet. Connor is a survivor and quite the caracter.His story can be read in the book called Greyhound Survivors compiled by Helen Ethridge.

I thought I was getting a galgo but out of the crate came this gorgeous young greyhound. I later found tatooes in both his ears someone had tried toerase the tatooes with acid and then tatooed both Connors ears three to four times on top of the old tatooes. This made me curious as to his past life. Therefore I began to research his background and I managed to track down his sire and most of the dams pedigree. The sire has been substanciated as his sire I could never do the same with his dam because the Spanish greyhound studbook had been destroyed when the last track in Barcelona closed its gates for good. I have always wanted to know where my hounds stem from and what their pedigree is. I found out that Connor is related to my very first greyhound. So in a sense it felt like getting a bit of her back as if life came full circle. I am involved with greyhound rescue and alerting others to the plight of racing greyhounds because of what Connor has gone through. Besides I know that my lads are related and believe or not the family traits are very strong. Connor is sort a throw back to a great grandsire of his named Greenpark Fox he is a spitting image of him. Aside from that it is always good to know what their health might be like at a later time in life will they get athritis ect ect. These are my reasons for wanting to know. It would be fun if your greyhounds were are related to mine as it is great to know they have relations elsewhere. Hence my questions and reasons. Comment by Marianne Adema on September 8, 2010 at 7:23pm: I will look at the papers soon, i have just a copy of his Birth Parents mum ans dad and all who where before him all champions,i have putted them away 10 years ago,will need to check out,where they are now, i suppose by his adoption papers and vet papers,and insurence papers for his health,as soon i have found them i will let You know,about Tula, i did not get any papers,when You,get a dog from Spain and adopt them after have been a racing dog,they loose there papers and family tree,for me its not that important because , i do not breed with them or race with them,or go to shows,i did sign agreement, I would not do so,because these dogs,need love and care and rest,and thats all they are getting love and care and rest and goodfood,and good treatment from me and once a year from the vet.same goes for Pablo, i gave him the name,once he came here in my home,8 years ago,i do not know his realy name before,or what he has done for racing or breeding,it does not matter to me, i know, he is safe and know one will hurt him anymore,and he loves me so much,that i am happy to have been able to adopt him and have him here with me,and my sweet ladies,I know that sandy comes from a farm and never had been outsite before she was with me, i needed to teach her evrything, i have her now 10 years,she was one when i have adopted her,Didi is a ex-show dog,she did not like that any more,and has had one nest of puppies with her last owner,she had 9 puppies the poor small Didid,she is 7 now and is with me,now for 6months,she loves it here and is happy to have the rest and peace here,she does not have to work any more or having puppies,she loves me to death after this short time,she grew up with her sister and 10 Irish Wolves hounds,when i come home,from have been out site,she howls like a wolve,so happy she is,that i am home again,Tula is on the bed,biting her fur petdog,letting me know,how happy she is that i am home,she talks in here own way to me,same with Pablo,he sings his song of happyness,and sandy loves to be cuddled when i am home.its so nice to come home ,with my 4 sweet dogs at home,they are all retired and happy dogs,that is so much important to me.love and hugs,Marianne

I am sure you miss him from time to time just like I do my very first Greyhound Niki. They have such a profound impact on our lives that we will never forget them and that the love we have for each individual greyhound is something we can always keep in our hearts.

Comment by Marianne Adema on September 7, 2010 at 3:30am: Tula, is a mix of Galgo and Greyhound,they do that,in the area she comes from,and Pablo is a full breed Greyhound, and Sandy is a mix of Greayhound and whipped,Didi is a full breed whipped, i can always ad a group for all windhounds and sight hounds,just let me know my sweet friend,love and hugs,Marianne
And Sandokan,was a Greyhound of Belgium, a real champion,and a full breed from his dad and mums site,so i have all combined here at home, I still miss Sando.

I have a greyhound who was born in Castil La Mancha out of an Irish sire and dam. Who had bothbeen exported from Ireland most likely from Limrick Where they hold greyhound auctions. The sire of Connor is called Machine Gun aka Glenmartin Sands. You are still most welcome and we are happy to have you here just know that this is predominantly for greyhounds the ex -racers discarded by the racing industry and many of them come from traumatic pasts Like two of mine Connor as I have written about above and my hands on rescue Tristan who was born in Abbey Feale Dromtrasna in County Limrick then I have my third greyhound Darcy who retiered as a racing champion,derbywinner,winner of breeders cup national champion and runner up for title of best racing greyhound in the year 2007. Your galgos were most likely coursing dogs bred to hunt rabbits and hares used and then discarded. the only racetracks left in Spain are the mobile tracks who move from place to place all over Spain this is where my greyhound Connor was raced as was his sire and dam.Galgos are lovely. my friend Marianne has got one galgo a rescue from here named Jack and one greyhound aged two named Joy.
